Our Story

For 75 years, First United Methodist Church of Gonzales has been a place where people have gathered to worship, grow, serve, and experience the faithfulness of God. In 2001, the church celebrated 50 years of ministry. That same year, after the tragedy of September 11, churches across the nation became places of prayer, comfort, and hope. In the years that followed, First UMC Gonzales continued to lean into its mission, welcoming new generations and beginning contemporary worship in 2002 to reach new hearts while honoring timeless truth.

As Gonzales and Ascension Parish grew, so did the church’s ministry. Ground was broken for the Celebration Center, expanding the campus and creating new opportunities for worship, fellowship, and service. When hurricanes Katrina and Gustav struck, the church opened its doors and offered helping hands. Food was shared. Homes were repaired. Children were nurtured. Strangers became neighbors. New ministries were born, including outreach efforts that continue to reflect Christ’s love in practical ways.

Then came the pandemic. Sanctuaries fell silent, but the church did not stop being the church. Worship adapted. Community found new forms. Care continued. Through changing seasons, denominational uncertainty, leadership transitions, and the challenges of a growing community, First UMC Gonzales has remained anchored in faith. From a moved building to a growing campus, from shared pastors to shared purpose, from faith planted to faith lived, the story continues.

God has been faithful. God is faithful. And God is not finished yet.
